Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland, conducting cutting-edge research in four main fields: future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. PSI develops, builds, and operates complex, large research facilities. Every year, more than 2500 scientists from Switzerland and around the world come to PSI to use our unique facilities to carry out experiments that are not possible anywhere else. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are apprentices, post-graduates, or post-docs. For pupils, it offers the school laboratory iLab.

The Nuclear Energy and Safety division (NES) is the Swiss competence centre for nuclear energy and maintains key competencies with a special focus to the safety of the Swiss nuclear power plants, contributing to the scientific justification of the safe management (disposal) of radioactive wastes. The work is being done on behalf of the Federal Government, in close cooperation with the Swiss nuclear utilities, the national waste management organization, Nagra, and the national regulatory authority, ENSI. It also includes scientific services for the nuclear power plants. Most of the research is associated with international projects on a multinational or bi-national cooperation basis.
